Tours by Elizabeth Bell

Elizabeth Bell, a resident of Antigua for more than 35 years, was born in Burlingame, CA, grew up in Palo Alto, and moved to Antigua at the age of 14. She is a graduate of the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, holding a degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. After experiencing the 1976 earthquake in Antigua, she worked on her Masters of Arts (ABT) at the University of Washington, majoring in Latin American History and Historiography. Upon her return, she co-authored the first of her series of books on Antigua. As Director of Educational Programs at the Consejo Nacional para la Proteccin de La Antigua from 1978 to 1987 and as head of its Information Department, she designed and directed preservation programs for 10,000 schoolchildren each year. She also authored and edited their publications and received a certificate in Architectural Conservation at the International Centre for the Conservation and Preservation of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in Rome, Italy in 1983. She was awarded a post graduate certificate in Heritage and Tourism from the Centro Nacional de Conservacin, Restauracin y Museologa in Havana, Cuba in 1997. Ms. Bell has regularly attended seminars in these fields in Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, Guatemala and elsewhere. With emphasis on cultural tourism in Antigua, Ms. Bell has conducted tours and developed slide presentations and lectures since 1992. She is an active supporter of the restoration efforts of the Colonial Art Museum and other foundations. Her greatest joy, however, is researching the city. She has authored and published Antigua Guatemala (English, Spanish, & Italian editions), Lent and Holy Week in Antigua (English, Spanish), two bilingual coloring books: Let's See Antigua and Fiestas and Holidays in Antigua and a trilingual coloring book Let's Save the Scarlet Macaws (English, Q'eqchi' & Spanish)
